2012 Street Painting Events
Dia de los Muertos 2012Canoga Park, CA (11/04/2012)
Size: 6' x 6' (1 day event, 5.5 hours) Title: Let's Enjoy Ourselves for One Day This was my first time at this place. It was quite interesting. Very very casual. You pick your spot and you pick your size and go for it. The organizer Juliana is very nice and make sure that all her "Chalk Babies" (that's what she calls all the chalk artists who attend her events.) This is held in conjunction of the annual Dia de los Muertos event where there are lots of music and food on Main St of Canoga Park. Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of the dead and people paint their faces with skeletal like paintings, I decided to do a fun piece. Since it was close to Election Day with Romney & Obama campaigning all over the country.. Why not have them enjoy a little.... so the concept and the drawing came togethere.. It was quite a hit with people. Even the major of Canoga Park liked it and I took a picture with him in front of my drawing.. |

Belmont Sidewalk Chalk Festival 2012Long Beach, CA (10/20/2012)
Size: 3.5' x 4.5' (1 day event, 6 hours) Title: The Dalai Lama Best in Show Awards Long Beach is where I live and receiving the Best in Show here was quite an honor. This is where I first started my Chalk Art Event in 2009. I found out about this event and told myself to try it. Never knew that I would get addicted to this Art Form. The instant gratification and the interaction with on-lookers and the rush for having a time limit to complete your piece. Wow.. quite challenging.. but all worth it. And I am glad that I still love it and will continue until I can't sit on the floor to do it anymore... I chose my subject "Dalai Lama" because I respect him. He is a recognizable figure and a respectful one. I can't express my connection and emotion I have with what's going on with the country. I am not a Tibetan but Chinese and that is why I can't understand the need to rule a land and its people when the culture is so different and they have such a strong sense of who they are with their roots. Why do we need to force them to be part of China.. It is about time to give its independence back to Tibet. Well, no politics.. just art... sorry..... |
The last photo was taken with Justin Rudd, the organizer of this event. He is very active with the community and sponsors lots of events and for good cause. A really nice guy. Check out his website: www.justinrudd.com. Thank you Justin.

Gesso Italiano 2012Little Italy, San Diego, CA (10/13/2012 & 10/14/2012)
Size: 10' x 10' (2 day event, 16 hours) Theme: Venetian Masquerade (Aerial View Photos were taken by Steven Anderson) People's Choice Award This was my 3rd year participating this event. We were to choose one of the 6 regions preselected by the Organizers and I chose Venice. We were to draw anything that has to do with our chosen region. Sine Venice was known for their Masquerade, I decided to find interesting masks that represented the typical styles of their Masquerade Celebration. I had so much fun drawing this since all the masks are so colorful and decorative. People really liked how I put them together like a collage. At the left bottom corner, I want to make sure that those who are not familiar with the Masquerade in Venice, at least, they will recognize the Gondola, which is one of the well known symbol for Venice. There were only 2 awards given for the Adult Category. Best in Show & People's Choice Award and I received he latter. The tally or counting all the votes took almost a week. When I received the notice from email, I was really honored. |

Art Splash 2012Carlsbad, CA (9/22/2012 & 9/23/2012)
Size: 8' x 12' (2 Day Event, 18 hours) Sponsor: SkinMedica This was my 2nd year participatin at Art Splash. Prior to the event, I was contacted by the organizer that one of the sponsor "SkinMedica" was looking for an artist who would do a specific piece of their photo. Since I love portraits so when they presented me the photo, I immediately agreed. I was quite a challenge due the size of each face. The most challenging was that the 3 faces, each of different ethnicity so the tone was in 3 totally different face tones or shades. I think they turned out alright. A couple of people who work for SkinMedica dropped by and they seemed to like it so I am happy. Looking forward the 2013... |

Sylmar Chalk @ Olive Festival 2012Sylmar, CA (9/01/2012 & 9/02/2012)
Size: 6' x 12' each paintings (Two Day Event, 14 hours) 2 artworks displayed here.. Contemporary Original work by: Ora Tamir (this one by artist Jony Tolentino) Classical Original work by: William-Adolphe Bouguereau (this one by me) Both Jay (Jony Tolentino) and I were featured artists at the festival Best Rendition of a Masterpiece Award This was the first time the Sylmar held a chalk festival so we really didn't know what to expect. There were many things happened at the festival but all the artists and our organizer , Juliana Martinez, worked so hard to pull this event together and made it fun and a memorable one. Jay and I shared the same circular area that was actually a BBQ or picnic area. That weekend was very hot but luckily, we were in the shaded area with two huge trees (one on each side blocking the sun). Other artists weren't as lucky. Jony (Jay) Tolentino is a very talented artist who specializes in graffiti art but not only limited to that at all. He has already worked on a few projects with some of the great chalk artists around. This particular painting Jay worked on was a rendition of a painting by artist Ora Tamir whom he met at an art show. He admired her work so much that permission was granted from artist Ora Tamir to be used by Jay at some of the Chalk Festivals. He did a beautiful job. I liked it a lot myself and was honored to draw and paint next to him. Mine was a rendition of a painting by William Bouguereau with a girl holding a basket of grapes. Since our chalk event was inside Olive Festival, I turned the grapes to Olives instead..... I wasn't sure if I could do it well since artist William Bouguereau's paintings are so recognizable. But, I think I did well. Hope you like both of our paintings. |

Redondo Pier Chalk Festival 2012Redondo Beach, CA (8/18/2012)
Size: 4' x 4' (One Day Event, 4 hours only) Title: Now, Then 1960s Best Artist Award (Professional Category) This year marked the 10th year anniversary for the Chalk Event held at the Redondo Beach Pier so the them was "The Pier". When I found out the them, I wasn't sure if I could come up of an idea about the Pier. I researched somewhat about the Pier and if there is anything that I should do to make the Pier tell its story.. after searching and searching, I stumbled to this old photo of the Pier.. It was so different... it caught my attention. That's it.. why not draw the old Pier. There you go.. why now draw the old Pier and the new Pier? With that idea, I played around with the image and finally settling with drawing both but with a transition from the Old Pier to what is now, New Pier. To really capture the essence, the Old Pier, I did it in black & white and made it gradually transition with color to the New Pier. I was surprised that I was able to pulled through with the concept and drawing it.... |

For A Friend's Wife's Birthday GiftLong Beach, CA (8/17/2012)
Size: 5' x 12' (One Day of Work, 9 hours) Theme: Hawaii This was not an event but a friend asked me if I can do a drawing on their drive way and I said yes. Simple as that. The size of the area was actually bigger than I expected. But, he was a good friend and a very nice guy so I went there and delivered my promise. Originally, he wanted to have this done on her birthday but I had the event on the same day so I did it a day before which turned out perfect. I enjoyed a lot and it came out very colorful and beautiful. The theme was Hawaii so I did a very tropical piece. They are into the Hawaiian culture so they decorated the place with lots of Polynesian and Hawaiian things. Very nice.... |

Corona Street Painting Festival 2012Corona, CA (7/28/2012)
Size: 6' x 8' (One Day Event, 6.5 hours) Native American Girl ("Annie" original artwork by Harley Brown) Artists Choice Award It was hot. But, the organizer was very kind to provide tents (canopies) for everyone. It was only a one day event located in front of the theater and a very relaxing setting. I really enjoyed it even though it was only a one day thing. This was my second year and this year I did a replica of an artwork by Harley Brown, who is a famous artist and known for his Native American subject paintings. I was so inspired by his artwork that I believe by doing his work and try to follow his style, I will be able to learn the techniques from this great master. I think I did well and I was happy that I was selected for the Artists Choice Awards. Now that I won, the deal is, I have to come back the following year to do a workshop with the children and another piece which I will be honored. So... see you next year..... |

Fun With Chalk 2012Rancho Santa Margarita, CA (7/14/2012 - 7/15/2012)
size: 10' x 10' (Two Day Event, 16 hours total) Title: Knowledge Most Original Art Award This my first year at this event and it was located in a hidden area, a very nice area called Rancho Santa Margarita. There was no particular them so we can do anything we want. I chose a subject that I always like which is a drawing of Buddhist monks. I chose to draw 2 young monks studying. The original picture I found was 2 monks reading during the day with the sunlight hitting from the back. I decided that I wanted to be a little more dramatic so I turn it to a night scene where 2 young monks reading at night with an oil candle. I wanted to show that it doesn't matter who you are and where you are, education is important. You gain knowledge by education. It turned out better than I actually expected. I was happy. I also (for the first time) created a frame border around it. I loved it. The organizer, Frank, was very nice. That's what I like about some of the events. They have really nice organizers and they really took care of the artists. |

La Jolla Festival of the Arts 2012La Jolla, CA (6/23/2012 - 6/24/2012)
Size: 3' x 3' x 3pieces total (Two Day Event, 16 hours total) Theme: Orange Crate Label ( For Auction: All 3 sold ) This was a rather unique event. There was a theme but we it was not a competition but more of a donation / sale combo. The organizer was very nice and treated the artist very well. We were to create a chalk art on a concrete board (gessoed) with the Orange Crate Label theme in mind. They were to be auctioned out to the public. The money will be split 50/50 between the artist & the event as part of the donation. It was actually very nice. The setting was nice. I did 3 pieces total. 1. Lady Day 2. Rooster 3. Sunflower I planned for 4 drawings but didn't have enough time. Maybe a little too aggressive. I learned my lesson. I was just happy that I was able to create 3 of them and all 3 were sold. I will sign up again next year.. |

Pasadena Chalk Festival 2012Pasadena, CA (6/16/2012 - 6/17/2012)
Size: 8' x 8' (Two Day Event, 16 hours total) Title: Chinese Opera Pasadena is one of the biggest event in the USA. This year marked the 20th Year Celebration. As usual, there were many great artists showcasing their beautiful work. The Pasadena Event, I have made a promise that I will always stick to the Chinese Culture for my theme. This year, I decided to do a Chinese Opera. Chinese Opera is unique and for the most part tells stories of some historical event. This particular one is called the "Drunken Mistress" (Guei Fei Tsui Jio). It tells a story of a very beautiful Mistress supposed to be spending a day with her Emperor drinking. Back in those days, the Emperors had many mistress. This particular Mistress was considered one of the four beauties in the Chinese History. This particular night, the Emperor forgot and spent the evening with another Mistress. After finding out she got very upset and got drunk by herself. That's the basic of the story. The costumes for the Chinese Opera are very colorful. I think I did capture the essence of it. I was quite satisfied with the result of my painting. At least it caught the eyes of a couple of Chinese Reporter....hehehe. |

Arts Alive 2012Mission Viejo, CA (5/05/2012 - 5/06/2012)
Size: 12' x 12' ( Two Day Event, 16 hours total) Title: Girl with Black Eye (Original Art by Norman Rockwell) Best Rendition of a Masterpiece Award The theme for this year's event was "1950s". I chose a piece by Norman Rockwell because I am a great admirer of Norman Rockwell's Art. His illustration of kids are so lively, as if a moment captured with a camera. I searched for an interesting piece done by him during the 1950's and came across this one. The minute I saw this one, I had to draw this. I think I did a "not bad" job. Since his work is so recognizable, I have to make sure I would be able to capture the liveliness of his artwork. i think I am happy that it turned out quite nice... The funny thing is that so many people can relate to this image regardless of how old or how young.... we have had similar moment of this... |

Chalk It Up Prescott 2012Prescott, AZ (4/21/2012 - 4/22/2012)
Size: 14' x 16' ( Two Day Event, 14 hours total) Title: Rango and Who? in 3D Best of Show Award I had a lot of fun at this event interacting with the on lookers. This event was held at Prescott, AZ. A total of 7 hours drive from Long Beach, CA. The staff were very nice and accommodating. They made sure I had plenty of water since both days were very hot. My piece is a drawing of "Rango" the cameleon, an animation character voiced by Johnny Depp. This was a 3-D challenge. I drew Rango in the desert sitting in front of a pond looking down at his own reflection. Next to him, is "anyone who wants to sit next to him and pose" but the reflection is the character "Bean". During the whole time, I was able to convince the people to interact with this 3D piece I did. Kids loved it... |

I recovered fast the next day morning so I was able to complete the drawing by 3:45pm. The 2nd day was just absolutely wonderful. I enjoyed the city, the people.. had a very good time. What an experience. Well worth the trip. Driving took 7 hours from Long Beach, CA |

Orlando Uptown Art Expo 2012Altamonte, FL (2/18/2012)
Size: 7' x 5' ( One Day Event, 6 hours) Title: Young boy Playing a Flute Judges Choice Award This event was held on 2/18 in a beautiful setting of Altamonte, FL. It was gloomy during the day and wasn't sure if it would rain or shine. We all took our chances and start laying the drawings & colors. Even though it was gloomy, the area was beautiful and the people were so nice. I did a piece call "Young Boy Playing a Flute". The original Artwork was done by Judith Leyster, a Dutch Painter of the 16th Century. I think I did a pretty good job. |
